Alprazolam, generically known as Xanax, is used to treat generalized anxiety disorders and panic disorders. It belongs to a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It is used in both adults and children. When taken, it helps stop episodes of intense anxiety when they begin to occur. It acts on the central nervous system (CNS), calming the brain and nerves by increasing levels of the neurotransmitter GABA in the brain.
